Country music legend Randy Travis is celebrating another trip around the sun.
The Grammy-winning crooner officially turned 67 on Monday, May 4, taking to his Instagram Story to celebrate the occasion and thank his fans for sending sweet birthday wishes his way.
On this day in 1959, Travis was born in the city of Monroe, North Carolina. He grew up in a rural part of the state in a small town called Marshville, before moving to Nashville in the ’80s to pursue a career in country music.
In 1985, he released his debut single, “On the Other Hand,” which became his first-ever No. 1 hit after he re-released it the following year. It spent one week at the top of Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart in July 1986, and was the first of many chart-toppers for Travis.
Some of the biggest hits of his career include “Forever and Ever, Amen,” which reigned at No. 1 for three weeks in 1987, and “Hard Rock Bottom Of Your Heart,” which had a 4-week run in 1990.
Travis’ other chart-topping hits include his 1986 track “Diggin’ Up Bones” (1986); “I Won’t Need You Anymore (Always And Forever)” and “Too Gone Too Long” (1987); “I Told You So,” “Deeper Than the Holler” and “Honky Tonk Moon” (1988); “It’s Just a Matter of Time” and “Is It Still Over” (1989); “Forever Together” (1991); “If I Didn’t Have You,” and “Look Heart No Hands” (1992); “Whisper My Name” (1994); and “Three Wooden Crosses,” (2002).
He also has 7 Grammy awards under his belt, including wins in both the country and gospel categories.
In 2013, Travis suffered a near-fatal stroke that significantly affected his ability to sing and speak, resulting in a subsequent aphasia diagnosis. He now has limited mobility and often uses a wheelchair, but that doesn’t stop him from frequently attending events and making public appearances, usually accompanied by his longtime wife, Mary.
