As the global film fraternity converges on the French Riviera for the prestigious Cannes Film Festival (12th May to 23rd May), India’s presence this year reflects a rich tapestry of regional cinema, established auteurs, and contemporary stars.Leading the Punjabi film industry’s debut stride is actor-singer Ammy Virk, who will attend the festival for the first time with his film ‘Chardikala’. Accompanying him is co-star Roopi Gill, marking a significant moment for Punjabi cinema on an international stage.From the official delegation, filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker will represent India in his capacity as the newly appointed director of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).Marathi cinema is set to bring cultural elegance to the red carpet, with veteran actors Ashok Saraf and Nivedita Saraf, along with actress Prajakta Mali and producer Kedar Joshi. The group plans to appear in traditional Marathi attire, offering a visual celebration of regional identity at the global event.Gujarati cinema will find representation through actor-producer Mansi Parekh, who will attend alongside her husband, singer and producer Parthiv Gohil. Their participation highlights the growing ambition of Gujarati filmmakers to reach international audiences.Malayalam cinema’s recent global acclaim continues with filmmaker Chidambaram, known for Manjummel Boys, screening his film ‘Balan:The Boy’ at Cannes market this year.Bollywood, too, maintains a strong presence. Regular Cannes attendee Aishwarya Rai Bachchan returns as a global ambassador for L’Oréal, joined by actress Alia Bhatt. Filmmaker Karan Johar, along with actors Tara Sutaria, Mouni Roy, and Pooja Batra, are also expected to attend, adding star power from the country.This year’s Indian contingent reflects not just Bollywood’s glamour but also the rising prominence of regional cinema. From Punjab to Kerala, Gujarat to Maharashtra, the country’s cinematic diversity is poised to make a compelling statement at Cannes, both on the red carpet and beyond.
