On the night of December 8, 2025, while people were sleeping peacefully in their houses, a strong undersea earthquake hit off the northeastern coast of Japan close to Aomori Prefecture. The magnitude of the quake was recorded at 7.5–7.6. The tremor was so strong that it created a strong “upper-6” level tremor in the cities nearby.The whole country woke up in seconds and was seen on the roads. Soon, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued tsunami warnings for coastal prefectures. Residents and travellers were strongly advised to stay away from Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures with an initial forecast of waves up to 3 meters.Aftershocks and evacuationsThe local authorities soon sprang into action. Sanae Takaichi, Japan’s Prime Minister, activated emergency task forces to assess damage. Injured people were soon taken to safety and evacuations began. As per local reports, several people sustained injuries in Aomori though there are no confirmed fatalities yet.Soon, over 90,000 residents across affected prefectures were asked to move to higher ground.
