When it comes to IVF treatments, concern and confusion take over the decision for many couples who are looking for alternate options for conceiving. This is all because of the lack of awareness that comes with IVF, but not many talk about it. Fertility treatments are often misunderstood because of the myths and misinformation attached to them. The lack of openness in discussing fertility also adds to this frustration when people are just looking for a sign of hope. It is crucial, then, that these misconceptions and worries be put aside when discussing what fertility treatments are actually about and make informed decisions rather than being held back by fear or misinformation. These are some of the myths and notions that people have regarding fertility treatments, which create misunderstandings among patients. Here are a few myth busters when it comes to fertility treatments
•Myth 1: Infertility is always a woman’s problem.
Fact: The truth is, both men and women contribute to infertility. Causes for male infertility include low sperm count, low motility, structural blockages, and so on, which make up almost 40-50% of the cases.
•Myth 2: IVF causes weight gain and long-term health problems.
Fact: IVF medications are taken only for a short time and do not cause permanent weight gain or problems related to overall health. Some temporary weight changes can happen because of hormones, but they usually settle after the treatment cycle ends.
•Myth 3: IVF babies are unhealthy and suffer from developmental delay.
Fact: IVF babies are just as healthy as babies that are conceived naturally. Also, IVF can include genetic testing, which helps doctors select healthy embryos, something that is not possible in natural pregnancies.
•Myth 4: Egg freezing is only for women with health problems.
Fact: Egg freezing is not just for medical conditions. Many women choose it simply because they are not ready to have a baby right now and want to keep the option open for the future.
•Myth 5: IVF is the only option for fertility.
Fact: IVF is not the only option when it comes to fertility. Treatments like ovulation induction, timed intercourse, and IUI (intrauterine insemination) are also other options. Depending on the specific condition, like age, ovarian reserve, and fallopian tubes patency, suitable treatment is advised.
•Myth 6: Is the IVF baby truly mine?
Fact: Yes, an IVF baby is genetically the same as a naturally conceived baby. The only difference is that the fertilization takes place in a laboratory, and not inside the body.
•Myth 7: IVF is only for older women.
Fact: While it’s a well-known fact that fertility declines with age, fertility treatments are about health and timing, not about age. In fact, many younger women who undergo treatments for conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, or ovulation issues may need fertility assistance, regardless of age.
•Myth 8: IVF process is very painful.
Fact: IVF injections are important part of IVF process. Most people feel little discomfort and severe pain is rare. After egg retrieval, some patients might feel mild pain, which is tolerable and well managed with drugs given for pain relief. The hesitance that comes with fertility treatments is normal, but to not take a decision at all comes at a higher cost. Once, we know the reality behind fertility treatment, making a sound decision becomes easier. That is why, always check with a fertility specialist for a quick and accurate diagnosis, and understand what fertility treatments work for you.(Dr Kirti Singh, MBBS, MD, DNB (Obs & Gyn), Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine, Clinical Consultant, Aksigen IVF)
