The record-breaking raise highlights the company’s rapid growth and its central role in the global artificial intelligence race. The funding round was co-led by SoftBank along with investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and D. E. Shaw Ventures.In a press release, OpenAI said, “AI is driving productivity gains, accelerating scientific discovery, and expanding what people and organizations can build.” “This funding gives us the resources to continue to lead at the scale this moment demands,” the company added.
Pressure builds on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman
With the new funding and high valuation, pressure is now shifting to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to deliver sustained growth and justify the company’s valuation, says a CNBC report. OpenAI is reportedly reviewing its spending and scaling back some projects as it focuses on efficiency.The company acknowledged the scale of the moment, stating, “Moments like this do not come often.” It added that the investment will help build the “infrastructure layer for intelligence itself.”
“In past generations, capital markets helped build the systems that defined modern economies, from electricity to highways to the internet,” OpenAI said, adding “This is that kind of moment again. The capital being deployed today is helping build the infrastructure layer for intelligence itself. Over time, that value will flow back into the economy, to companies, to communities, and increasingly to individuals.”OpenAI is also investing in computing infrastructure and partnerships across cloud providers and chipmakers to support growing demand for AI systems. The company said its long-term goal is to expand access to AI while improving performance and reducing costs.Despite rapid growth, OpenAI is not yet profitable, and its next phase will be closely watched by investors and the wider tech industry.The company reported strong growth, with ChatGPT now serving over 900 million weekly active users and more than 50 million subscribers. OpenAI said it is generating $2 billion in revenue per month, after reaching $1 billion in annual revenue shortly after launching ChatGPT in 2022.
