X is down for thousands of users across multiple countries

Reports of app failures, crashing feeds, and website access problems flooded DownDetector Today.

X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, went down for thousands of users late this afternoon, with complaints pouring into DownDetector across multiple countries and no immediate explanation from the company.

The problems surfaced across both the app and the website. By 8:14 p.m., DownDetector had logged 258 reports, a number that grew sharply within minutes. The sharpest spike came at 8:28 p.m., when reports jumped to 3,836 in a short window. By 5 p.m. earlier in the day, some trackers had already noted around 2,000 complaints, and the figure continued climbing through the evening.

The breakdown of complaint types told a consistent story. Around 37% of users reported problems with the app itself, while 30% described issues with their feeds and timelines failing to load. Another 28% reported being unable to access the website at all. For those who could get into the platform, the most common experience was a frozen or blank feed, with the latest posts simply not appearing on refresh.

Where the outage hit hardest

The disruption was global, but the United States carried the heaviest volume. Over 19,160 users in the US submitted complaints, the highest total of any country. The United Kingdom followed with close to 4,360 reports, with London identified as the most heavily affected city. Canada logged more than 4,256 complaints, and Australia recorded over 1,297.

In the UK, the issues mirrored what users in other markets were experiencing. Birmingham and Manchester were also cited as significantly affected cities alongside London. The split between app problems, feed crashes, and website failures was broadly consistent across regions, suggesting the underlying issue was not isolated to any single point in the platform’s infrastructure.

No statement, no timeline

As of the time of reporting, X had not issued any public statement explaining the cause of the outage or offering a timeline for resolution. The exact technical origin of the disruption remains unknown.

DownDetector compiles its data from user-submitted reports, which means the figures represent a fraction of those actually affected. The platform has noted in the past that actual user impact is typically much higher than what its trackers capture.

A pattern that keeps repeating

Today’s outage is not an isolated incident. X has experienced a notably unstable stretch over the past several months. In January alone, the platform went down at least twice. On Jan. 16, nearly 9,000 outage reports came in from users in India, with the US again leading globally at over 58,000 complaints and Canada logging around 8,000. A nearly identical set of issues hit the platform just four days earlier on Jan. 12. Another outage followed in February.

A similar disruption occurred last November, at which point more than 5,000 users reported difficulties, again concentrated in major UK cities.

The frequency of these outages has drawn growing attention given the scale of the platform and its role in real-time news and public conversation. Whether Today’s disruption represents a new technical failure or a continuation of unresolved infrastructure problems is unclear. What is clear is that this is no longer an occasional anomaly for a platform that positions itself as essential to global communication
