Alessandro Bastoni is going through a very tough time, both on and off the field. The Italy national football team defender saw his night turn upside down during Italy’s World Cup play-off loss, and things only got worse after the match. Soon after the game ended, Bastoni and his wife Camilla Bresciani were hit with a wave of harsh and abusive messages online. Italy lost 4-1 on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team after a 1-1 draw in Zenica. That result confirmed Italy will miss the World Cup again, which made fans even more emotional. But what followed crossed a line, as the anger shifted from the pitch to personal attacks on Bastoni’s family. Because of this, both Bastoni and Camilla had to turn off comments on their social media pages to stop the abuse.

Alessandro Bastoni red card changes the game as Moise Kean goal and Haris Tabakovic equaliser shape Italy vs Bosnia result

Italy started the match well and looked in control early on. Moise Kean scored in the 15th minute to give the team a strong start. For a while, it felt like Italy had things under control. But everything changed just before half-time. Bastoni was shown a direct red card after bringing down Amar Memic during a fast counter-attack. The referee believed Memic had a clear chance to score, and Bastoni’s challenge from behind stopped that moment. From there, the game slowly slipped away from Italy. Bosnia kept pushing and finally got their goal late in the match through Haris Tabakovic. The match ended 1-1, but in the penalty shootout, Bosnia stayed calm and won 4-1. Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma could not stop the shootout loss, and the team’s World Cup hopes ended there.

What started as frustration over a football result turned into personal attacks on a player’s family. Now, Bastoni will shift his focus back to club football with Inter Milan. The team is currently leading the league and is in a strong position in the Serie A title race, ahead of AC Milan.
