There is a certain kind of product that comes along every few years and quietly shifts the ground beneath an entire industry. It does not always arrive with the loudest fanfare or the flashiest spec sheet. Sometimes it simply shows up, does things better than anyone expected at a price no one saw coming, and leaves competitors scrambling to figure out what just happened. The Apple MacBook Neo is that kind of product. Positioned as the most affordable Mac in the lineup, it arrives with a price tag that makes it accessible to students, casual users, and first-time Mac buyers, yet it doesn’t compromise on the essentials that define Apple’s reputation. From its sleek aluminum design to the seamless integration of macOS with Apple Silicon, the Neo promises a premium experience at a fraction of the cost.We used the Apple MacBook Neo for sometime in order to take a closer look at how the MacBook Neo performs across design, input devices, display quality, performance, software integration, battery life, and overall value.
Design
Apple never fails to surprise you when it comes to the design and colour scheme of its products and the MacBook Neo is no different. This latest affordable MacBook from Apple is a true example of how a company can deliver a premium look device at a budget-friendly price point. Crafted from aluminium, the MacBook Neo retains its sleek and minimalist look. The slim profile and lightweight design makes the laptop highly portable and ideal for both students and professionals. Despite being Apple’s most affordable laptop, the Neo doesn’t feel compromised, the body is sturdy, with no noticeable flex, and the finish exudes the same polished quality found in higher-end models. Apple has also paid a lot of attention to the finer details. The MacBook Neo features smooth and refined edges and its hinge mechanism also feels solid. The MacBook Neo also includes USB‑C ports positioned on either side of the device, allowing flexible charging and accessory connections whether you’re left- or right-handed. The keyboard on the MacBook Neo is definitely one of its most impressive features. Apple has carried over its well-regarded Magic Keyboard design, which provides a comfortable and precise typing experience. The colour-matched keys lend the whole package a cohesive, considered aesthetic that feels anything but budget. The keys are well-spaced and feature a refined scissor-switch mechanism which offers a satisfying balance of travel and responsiveness. During our testing, the MacBook Neo loggers precise and stable typing experience with negligible wobble. Along with this, Apple has also maintained the quiet operation that makes the keyboard suitable for classrooms, libraries, or shared workspaces. The layout is intuitive, with function keys and shortcuts easily accessible, and the backlighting ensures visibility in low-light environments. Also worth noting: Touch ID is only available on the higher-end 512GB storage model meaning base buyers will need to rely on password entry or an Apple Watch for authentication.

Coming to the trackpad, the Apple MacBook Neo features a large trackpad. The large multi-touch trackpad on the MacBook Neo offers intuitive gestures which allow smooth and precise control, allowing users scroll, click and pinch anywhere on the surface. The click mechanism of the trackpad may feel less refined as compared to the MacBook Air or Pro, but anyone switching from a Windows laptop or purchasing their first Macbook will look its smooth performance. Apple’s trackpad technology remains best-in-class at this price point, with no palm rejection issues and consistent, satisfying feedback across the entire surface. The trackpad on the laptop offers immediate responsiveness and the macOS integration further ensures that every gesture feels intuitive and natural. To sum up, the trackpad on the MacBook Neo is not only large but it also offers accurate and unmatched usability. Overall, the MacBook Neo’s design strikes a balance between style, portability, and functionality, proving that Apple can deliver a budget-friendly laptop without any compromise
Display
Apple MacBook Neo features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display which comes with 24098×1506 pixel resolution. The display offers up to 500 nits brightness level and support for 1 billion colours, bringing to life sharp, crystal-clear text and vibrant images. The display is both brighter and higher in resolution than most PC laptops in this price range. It also comes with an anti-reflective coating which offers a comfortable viewing experience in different types of lighting conditions. The text appears crisp and easy to read, while the images and videos benefit from accurate colour reproduction and wide viewing angles of the MacBook Neo display. Although it doesn’t reach the advanced levels of the mini‑LED or OLED screens found on the MacBook Pro lineup, the Neo’s display still feels premium. The screen on the MacBook Neo can handle HD content with ease and the panel manages to strike a balance between affordability and quality making sure that the visual experience doesn’t feel compromised. In short, the MacBook Neo’s display is bright, sharp, and reliable, offering a level of polish that makes it feel far above typical budget laptops.

Performance
All the performance power of the Apple MacBook Neo comes from Apple’s A18 Pro chipset. It is the same silicon which powered the Apple iPhone 16 Pro. The Apple 18 Pro chipset is not underpowered and the MacBook Neo very well handles everyday tasks that you throw at it. The device smoothly managed the 30 open Chrome tabs simultaneously along with the YouTube news websites, Google Docs, Twitter, Gmail, messages and Apple Music running alongside. Along with this, the MacBook Neo can also very well handle some light photo editing, music production, and video projects. In our opinion, students and casual users will find the performance MacBook Neo more than adequate. The integration of Apple Silicon also means that apps optimized for the architecture run exceptionally well, with efficiency gains that extend battery life and reduce heat output.Apple MacBook Neo manages to deliver a smooth software performance because of the seamless integration of macOS with Apple’s custom silicon. Running on Apple’s A18 Pro chip, the system feels fluid and responsive, with apps opening instantly and multitasking handled with ease. The device runs macOS Tahoe and it comes with some useful features and built-in apps like Safari, Photos, Messages, and FaceTime. Also, Apple Intelligence features like Writing Tools, Live Translation, and more are deeply integrated across macOS, elevating the user experience by bringing intelligence to the apps users rely on every day. The Neo also supports iOS-style apps and services, giving it a hybrid feel that blends the simplicity of mobile with the power of desktop computing. Security and privacy protections are built into macOS, with regular updates ensuring stability and resilience against threats.

The MacBook Neo brings back the 1080p “FaceTime HD” camera which sits on the thicker top bezel above the display. Despite the step-down resolution compared to newer Macs, the front camera on MacBook Neo offers accurate colour and in video calls you could make out fine details. The camera looks pretty good — and for a laptop at this price point, it looks damn good. The camera is also paired with a capable dual-microphone system. Dual mics make it easy to look and sound great on video calls. The dual mics are also designed to reduce background noise and isolate a user’s voice, allowing it to come across loud and clear for an excellent video conferencing experience. The microphone array supports both Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum modes, letting users choose between a tightly focused voice pickup or a broader room sound depending on the situation.Battery performance is one of the standout aspects of the Apple MacBook Neo, making it a reliable companion for all-day use. As mentioned above Apple has used the A18 Pro chipset in the MacBook Neo which not only improves its efficiency but also helps in optimising the battery performance of the laptop. Apple claims that the MacBook Neo can deliver up to 16 hours of battery life in a single charge and the claim turned out to be somewhat true in our testing. The battery easily lasted for around 14 hours of light to moderate usage which include tasks like streaming, browsing, note-taking and using productivity apps. However, there are chances that the battery will drain faster if you continuously use the laptop for video editing, extended multitasking or gaming. Apple MacBook Neo features a USB Type C charging port. Charging is relatively quick all thanks to Apple’s optimised power management. The combination of all-day battery and fanless silent operation makes the Neo an exceptional companion for commuters, students, and travellers alike.
Verdict
Apple MacBook Neo is Apple’s boldest step yet into the affordable laptop market, and it largely succeeds in delivering a premium experience at a relatively lower price. MacBook Neo comes with a starting price tag of Rs 69,990 and features a sleek and durable design. Performance from the A18 Pro chip is smooth and efficient, making the Neo more capable than its entry-level specs suggest, while macOS integration ensures a polished, seamless software experience. The MacBook Neo delivers Apple quality at a budget price, proving that “entry-level” doesn’t have to mean “second-rate.” It’s not the most powerful Mac, but it’s arguably the most accessible. In our opinion it is definitely a worthy buy for anyone who wants to enter the Apple ecosystem and also for the ones who are looking for an affordable alternative to Windows.
