Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally asked President Isaac Herzog to grant him a pardon while his corruption trial remains underway, his office confirmed on Sunday, reported AP.Netanyahu’s office said the request had been submitted to the legal department of the president’s office. In its response, Herzog’s office described it as “an extraordinary request which carries with it significant implications”, adding that “after receiving all of the relevant opinions, the president will responsibly and sincerely consider the request.”Netanyahu, the first sitting Israeli prime minister to stand trial, faces charges of fraud, breach of trust and bribery in three separate cases involving alleged favors exchanged with wealthy associates. He has denied all wrongdoing and has not been convicted in any of the cases. The pardon plea comes weeks after US President Donald Trump urged Herzog in a written communication to pardon Netanyahu – an appeal acknowledged by the president’s office.Netanyahu’s legal battle has remained a central point of political tension in Israel, with the request adding a fresh twist to the long-running proceedings.
