Jamshedpur: Timely crime control and filing of charge sheets within the stipulated times or earlier, successful investigations, tackling of crime against women effectively, engaging the community, proactive initiative to prevent crime and good behaviour to the local people are some of the good aspects police stations and personnel should have. One can find all these characteristics in the Chowka police station of Seraikela-Kharsawan district, for which the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) put the station in the fourth rank in its All India Ranking, a report which was released on Saturday.Chowka police station is also the best in the state. With it, this particular station has added two feathers to its cap.The top three in the MHA list go to Ghazipur (Delhi), Pahargaon (Andaman and Nicobar Islands) and Kavital (Karnataka) respectively.Notably, the MHA ranking is based on several parameters. Apart from those listed above, the MHA also judged the police stations based on people’s feedback, digital records and infrastructure of the station.Disposal and charge-sheet framing rate of the lodged complaints/FIRs, and the skill of the personnel are also assessed by the MHA surveying team.According to the MHA, the objective of the ranking is to encourage better policing by fostering healthy competition and identifying the best practices for an effective and responsive modern police force.Expressing satisfaction over the ranking bestowed to Chowka station, Seraikela-Kharsawan SP Mukheh Kumar Lunaya said, “It is indeed a proud moment for the Chowka thana officials in particular and the state police at large on this achievement, beating nearly 18,000 police stations across the country.”The SP appreciated the efforts of the former thana in charge, Bajrang Mahato, and thana officials for the achievement, as the survey was done earlier in May-June when Mahato was the thana in charge. The district police officials said that the ranking of the police stations was determined at the MHA-convened 60th All India Conference of the heads of the state police chiefs (DGsP/IGsP) held in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, from November 28 to 30.The rankings have been done based on the survey of all India thanas by an independent agency, officials said.Situated on the National Highway (NH-33) on the Tata-Ranchi stretch, Chowka thana has proximity to the Dalma hills. With Maoist influence in the thana limits declining in recent years, the thana police have largely been dealing with highway accidents, community security, social stigmas and elephant movement.
