Elon Musk's X announces XChat rolling out on iOS and Web, Android: Features, price and more

Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) has finally rolling out XChat its new privacy-focused messaging service rivalling WhatsApp. The company has announced that it has started rolling out the XChat messaging app on iOS and web platforms and it will soon arrive on Android as well. The messaging app comes with features that prioritise user security and offer better communication control. “XChat rolling out now on iOS and Web, Android coming soon. update your X app to access Chat and your legacy DMs in one unified inbox,” wrote the company in a post shared on X.Elon Musk announced the app in June and said that it is designed to address user demands for more secure and versatile private messaging capabilities within the platform. “All new XChat is rolling out with encryption, vanishing messages and the ability to send any kind of file. Also, audio/video calling.This is built on Rust with (Bitcoin style) encryption, whole new architecture,” wrote Musk on X.XChat is different from the other messaging apps available for the users. XChat is built on Rust, a programming language known for its speed and security, and employs encryption methods similar to Bitcoin’s protocol to enhance privacy and data protection.

Key features of XChat messaging app

Key features of XChat include:

  • End-to-End Encryption – Ensuring secure conversations.
  • Vanishing Messages – The messages will disappear after sometime. Users will be able to set timers for messages to disappear.
  • File Sharing – Ability to send any type of file.
  • Audio & Video Calls – Works across platforms without requiring a phone number.

XChat is presently available for all the X users. However, some of its features will only be available for the premium users. As hinted by Elon Musk some of the premium features such as expanded storage, priority support, and early access to experimental tools will be available for the paid X users.Musk has long expressed ambitions to transform X into a multi-functional platform, integrating payments, messaging, and more—similar to China’s WeChat. The introduction of XChat with these advanced features aligns with that broader goal.
