Iran had already secured qualification for the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup 2026, but the ongoing conflict has raised concerns about whether the Iranian national team will be able to travel to and compete in the United States, where several of their group-stage matches are scheduled to take place.

Why Iran Might Not Play

Iranian authorities are considering withdrawing the team from the tournament due to security and political concerns. According to FIFA regulations, if a qualified team withdraws from the World Cup before the tournament begins, FIFA has the authority to select a replacement team. Typically, the replacement is chosen from the same continental confederation that the withdrawing team belongs to. Since Iran qualified through the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), any potential replacement would likely come from Asia.Possible Teams That Could Replace Iran1. UAE can be the first choice of FIFA for the replacement as they qualified for continental play-off against Iraq in the fifth round of qualification. 2. Iraq defeated 3-2 UAE moving on to an intercontinental play-off match against either Bolivia or Suriname on March 31. Hence, Iraq might also be promoted straight into Iran’s place in Group G.

A Complicated Decision for FIFA

Replacing a qualified team at the World Cup is rare and presents logistical challenges, especially with the tournament approaching.
