No new permit for Indian onion imports | India News

NEW DELHI: Bangladesh has stopped issuing new import permits for onion from India through Hili land port citing “interests of domestic farmers”. Though 10 lakh tonnes of onion is shipped to the eastern neighbour, officials said Indian onions are still in high demand in other countries. “We expect onion will find more takers in the international market because of its quality,” an official said. Reports from Bangladesh quoted their officials as saying imports under previously approved permits would continue until Jan 30. Jaydutt Holkar, a director at the Lasalgaon APMC in Nashik, told TOI, “Wholesale prices have fallen because of increased arrival of fresh crop. Government should provide subsidy for exporters so we can compete with Pakistan and China.
