‘Safer & stronger’: After India's Shanti Bill, Sergio Gor says US ready to cooperate on civil nuclear, LPG exports

US ambassador Sergio Gor hails defence ties with India after SHANTI Bill

NEW DELHI: United States ambassador to India Sergio Gor has underscored the growing strength of India-US ties, highlighting expanding cooperation in defence and energy sectors following recent high-level engagements in Washington. In a series of posts on X, Gor said defence collaboration between the two countries continues to deepen, enhancing their strategic and security capabilities. “Defence cooperation between the US and India is only growing and it’s making both our countries safer and stronger,” he said.He added that discussions with US deputy secretary Feinberg focused on boosting defence sales and interoperability, noting that the partnership includes “defense sales of US equipment, the best in the world.”

Push for civil nuclear, energy cooperation

Gor also pointed to new opportunities in the energy sector, particularly after India’s passage of the SHANTI Bill. He said both sides are now prepared to expand cooperation in civil nuclear energy along with other areas.“After India’s historic passage of the Shanti bill, we are ready to cooperate on civil nuclear in addition to other areas such as coal gasification and US LPG exports,” he stated. The remarks came after a meeting involving US energy secretary Chris Wright and India’s foreign secretary Vikram Misri in Washington DC, where discussions centred on strengthening energy security and expanding bilateral trade.According to the Indian Embassy, both sides also explored new avenues to deepen the India-US energy partnership framework.

High-level engagements across sectors

During his three-day visit to Washington, Misri held multiple high-level meetings, including with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.Gor described his meeting with Misri as “productive,” noting that discussions covered trade, critical minerals, defence cooperation and engagement under the Quad framework. “India and the United States stand ready to work closely together in the months and years ahead,” he said in another post, after hosting Misri at Mar-a-Lago.The engagements signal a continued push by both countries to broaden their strategic partnership across defence, energy and economic domains, amid evolving global and regional challenges.
