Nicole Kidman's 'Scarpetta': Everything you need to know about the crime thriller
In a thrilling new eight-part series, Nicole Kidman takes on the role of Kay Scarpetta, a forensic pathologist whose character finally makes her on-screen debut. This gripping drama intricately weaves a contemporary investigation with flashbacks to a crucial case from the late 1990s, while also delving into Scarpetta’s nuanced family relationships.

When Patricia Cornwell’s legendary Kay Scarpetta novels were finally announced for a screen adaptation, fans had just one question: who could do justice to one of fiction’s most beloved forensic pathologists? The answer is Nicole Kidman, and with a cast that reads like an awards season dream, ‘Scarpetta’ is one of the most anticipated crime dramas in recent memory. The eight-episode series is based on Cornwell’s bestselling novels and marks the very first time the iconic character has ever been brought to the screen.

‘Scarpetta’ storyline

Cornwell first introduced the fictional character Dr. Kay Scarpetta in 1990, and the character quickly became one of the most recognisable figures in modern crime fiction. A forensic pathologist who is as precise in the lab as she is complicated in life. The series is built around two parallel timelines. The first takes us back to the late 1990s, following a younger Kay as she finds her footing in forensic science and takes on a case that will shape the rest of her career. The second is set in the present, where Kay returns to her hometown as Chief Medical Examiner to investigate a deeply unsettling murder, while also confronting the possibility that her landmark case from nearly thirty years ago may not hold up to scrutiny.Running alongside the investigation is Kay’s thorny relationship with her sister Dorothy Farinelli. Old tensions, long-buried grudges, and unfinished personal battles all come rushing back, making this as much a family drama as it is a crime thriller.

The cast

Kidman plays Dr. Kay Scarpetta, bringing both the steely authority and the emotional complexity the role demands. Jamie Lee Curtis plays older sister Dorothy, Emmy-winner Bobby Cannavale is the rugged Detective Pete Marino, The Mentalist’s Simon Baker portrays FBI profiler Benton Wesley, and Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose rounds out the core cast as Kay’s sharp, tech-driven niece Lucy Farinelli Watson. The flashback timeline is equally well-served. Rosy McEwen plays the young Kay, Amanda Righetti steps in as younger Dorothy, and in a genuinely charming casting choice, Jake Cannavale plays the younger version of his real-life father Bobby’s character.

The team behind it

Liz Sarnoff, the writer behind prestige hits ‘Deadwood’ and ‘Lost’, developed and showruns the series. David Gordon Green directed multiple episodes and serves as executive producer. Kidman, Curtis, and Cornwell herself are all executive producers, joined by celebrated horror producer Jason Blum and several other key creatives.

Release schedule

Unlike most series that keep audiences waiting week after week, ‘Scarpetta’ skips the slow drip entirely. All eight episodes have been released on March 11 at once on Amazon Prime Video, giving viewers the rare pleasure of following Dr. Kay Scarpetta’s story at their own pace, without the wait.
