Should Patriots Take Risk On Five-Time All-Pro Wide Receiver In Free Agency?

Date:

The New England Patriots replaced Stefon Diggs with Romeo Doubs in free agency, but they could still be in the market for another receiver.

The Patriots reportedly had interest in A.J. Brown, even after signing Doubs. However, the Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly not looking to trade him at this time. There are still receivers available for the Patriots to sign, including Tyreek Hill. However, the question with Hill is whether he will be the same after his injury.

Hill had surgery in September to repair a dislocated left knee and multiple torn ligaments, including his ACL, according to what his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN’s Adam Schefter last year. Hill is expected to play again at some point next season, but when that may be is unclear. The Miami Dolphins have officially released him, so he is free to sign with any team.

Hill has a chance to be a Hall of Famer when he retires, and could still be a superstar in the NFL. However, signing him comes with some risk given his injury and some off-the-field concerns. His game relies heavily on his game-breaking speed, but after his injury, there is no telling if he will be the same.

Hill has 12,182 career scrimmage yards and 90 touchdowns in 10 seasons. He recorded 7,349 scrimmage yards and 62 touchdowns with the Kansas City Chiefs. He was a six-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro with the Chiefs before he was traded to the Dolphins. Hill recorded 3,509 yards and 20 touchdowns in his first two seasons with the Dolphins.

However, in 2024, poor quarterback play held him under 1,000 yards. Last season’s injury limited him to just four games and 265 yards. The last two seasons for Hill have not been great, but it’s clear the quarterback situation in Miami has played a role.

On the Patriots, he would be paired with an MVP candidate at quarterback. Mike Vrabel has a way of getting the best out of players, so he could get another All-Pro campaign out of Hill. Hill and Doubs could be a great duo for the Patriots. If Hill is willing to sign a cheaper, short-term deal, the Patriots should definitely take a chance on him.
